Orelac Racing VerdNatura rider Fahmi Khairuddin took a tremendous second place in the sixth round of the World Supersport Championship in Sepang today. In difficult conditions Fahmi dominated the early proceedings and led the race for ten laps, before being passed by eventual winner Ayrton Badovini. The two of them had a frantic scrap for the last four laps, swapping the lead several times. In the end, Badovini managed to hold off Fahmi by just 0.50 of a second at the flag. It was Fahmi and the team’s first podium of the season and a sign that they are on course for more success this year. It was not such a good day for Fahmi’s teammate Nacho Calero. After a good start, Nacho’s bike suffered from a front-end chatter and he was unable to push hard and make up ground on his rivals. But, instead of pulling in, he kept going and finished 21st.
Fahmi Khairuddin – 2nd
“That was a great race, though I am a bit disappointed that I did not win it! I led for the majority of the race, but was overtaken four laps from the end. I then had a great battle with Badovini and nearly got him at the end. It was very close, but he just managed to stay in front. I want to say a big thank you to the whole team for all their hard work. Also to all the sponsors and all the fans, who made such a loud noise when they were cheering me on.”
Nacho Calero - 21st
“Not much to say really, except that I am disappointed I couldn’t ride the bike harder. Right from the start, the bike’s front end was chattering and that made it impossible for me to push as hard as I wanted.”
Giulio Bardi (Team manger)
“It was a very good day for the team and I am very happy. It is my birthday today, so Fahmi’s podium is a great present. When he was leading the race, I thought he might actually win, but to finish second and so close to the winner is a great result and makes the whole team happy.”
