Superpole 1 did not go as well as Orelac Racing VerdNatura rider Tati Mercado and the team had hoped today. The problems caused by the new bigger Pirelli tyre meant that the front end of Tati’s bike kept pushing and he so was unable to force his way into Superopole 2.
This meant starting today’s race from the sixth row of the grid, so it was never going to be an easy task getting into the top ten. To make matters worse, there was a red flag (because of a crash) and a false start, so the race finally got away at the third time of asking.
Tati – 12th
“The first start was OK, but then there was a red flag. The second time something went wrong with the lights, so we didn’t start. At the third attempt, we actually got away and then we had a normal race - shortened to 16 laps from 18.
I knew that I had to manage the rear tyre, so I began steadily and tried to save it for later in the race. I caught and passed some riders and was catching Hernandez, but ran out of laps. If the race had gone on one lap more, I’m sure I would’ve passed him and that would’ve been 11thplace.
Towards the end of the race, I tried to keep a fast pace, but the rear was sliding around a lot and there didn’t seem to be a lot of front-end grip.
This new (bigger) rear tyre does give better grip, but now we have to work on new settings for the front end to get the best out of the bike.
Unfortunately, there’s not enough time to try lots of different settings during a race weekend, so we struggle in that respect. Once we get a good set-up, we will definitely improve for sure.”
